Abstract:
Abstract This article presents three different formulations for the determination of displacements and stresses in a wound roll. They are those by Mazur and Timoshenko [1], Lekhnitskii [2], and the author [3], respectively. Issues such as the theoretical basis of the formulations, assumptions and simplifications made, and accuracy and effectiveness of the formulations are examined. Expandability and extendibility of the formulations are discussed. Numerical results show that (a) numerically all three formulations agree with each other; (b) they all seem to predict higher interlayer pressure values; (c) their accuracy in evaluating circumferential stress is very satisfactory, yielding only small discrepancy; (d) the present formulation and that by Lekhnitskii are more effective when computing only the core-roll interface pressure, and both are able to evaluate the entire pressure and circumferential stress profiles; and (e) as far as computing only the pressure profile is concerned, the Mazur and Timoshenko formulation is most effective. Finally, it should be pointed out that the present formulation is able to deal with cases where more complex loading conditions are involved [3].
