Abstract: Abstract The sliding cable structures have found its application in many practical structures, such as among ski lifts, electrical transmission lines, and cable systems in the erection procedures of long-span bridges. This paper presents two methods for modeling the cable sliding elements on the pulley or the sheave. “Sliding cable element” is developed with the direct stiffness methods. Based on the foundational principles of mechanics analysis, the relationship of the forces in the element at equilibrium state is studied. The sliding cable element formulations are simplified by automatically adjusting the cable length on each side of a pulley or a sheave. The presented elements are implemented in a geometrically nonlinear, transient implicit finite element program. Several numerical examples are developed to validate the effective of the sliding cable elements. Eigen frequency analyses are also conducted. The comparison of the structures considering the sliding or not are studied systematically.
