Chapter Chapter 11 in A Systems Approach to Leadership, 2009, pp 127-137 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Creating high performance is a journey that starts with you. It requires dedication, effort and courage. This chapter outlines the significant role emotions play in personal satisfaction and performance and describes a number of human dispositions which tend to reduce effectiveness in conditions of high complexity and uncertainty. Ways to manage yourself for optimum emotions and to minimise the undesirable effects of eight natural human tendencies are explained. These include thinking and talking in ways that embrace rather than ignore complexity, recognising the probability of long term goal achievement, defining success and satisfaction more locally, thinking in terms of “preferences” rather than “demands” and accepting and respecting the limitations of other people and systems.
