A chapter in The Future of Work, 2024, pp 397-406 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The shortage of skilled workers is a challenge that has been prevalent for decades. This article highlights where the largest skills gap in Germany exists and how strategies from sustainable human resource management can counteract this. Successful implementation in companies through the recruitment of, for example, so-called “Hidden Resources” and the promotion of transversal competencies can be successful measures and lead to competitive advantages. However, employers must also increasingly view their own staff as a scarce resource. Therefore, sustainable strategies are needed not only for the recruitment of external applicants, but also with a focus on internal employees.
