The Seven Traits of a Successful Company
Jean-Pierre Jeannet and
Hein Schreuder
Chapter 15 in From Coal to Biotech, 2015, pp 287-303 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this final chapter Schreuder discusses the company traits which in his view have contributed to DSM’s successful transformation. Seven traits are discussed: (1) Long-term orientation, (2) Evolutionary perspective, (3) Stakeholder orientation, (4) Sense of community and identity, (5) Stewardship, (6) Learning organization and (7) Conservative financing. A comparison with relevant literature shows that these traits are not unique to DSM but are shared with other ‘living’ or ‘visionary’ companies. Moreover, such companies often generate the highest financial returns. The DSM case can therefore be seen as one manifestation of a ‘gestalt’ of corporate traits that contribute to long-term corporate success as well as a route to achieving this.
