Transforming a Business School

Jean-Pierre Jeannet and Hein Schreuder

Chapter 2 in From Coal to Biotech, 2015, pp 31-57 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter describes the creation of IMEDE Institute in Lausanne in 1957 and its transformation into IMD Institute over a period of more than 40 years, including the merger with IMI-Geneva. During this time, the institute changed along several important axes, namely the change in business model portfolio towards in-company programs, the complete rebuilding of its physical plant and campus, and a different governance system. Details are offered how this shift in orientation took place and the roles key individuals played in making this possible. The chapter concludes by making the point that without these changes, the original IMEDE would most likely not have become the chosen partner for DSM in 1988.
