Embedding Business Strategy Dialogues as a Core Process

Abstract: Abstract This chapter details how the Business Strategy Dialogue (BSD) approach became a core process at DSM, inextricably intertwined with other processes and routines. The company trained its own cadre of BSD facilitators, thus dispensing with the prior need to hire strategy consultants for developing business strategies. After BSDs had been formally adopted as a core process, the company could start revamping its planning systems, which had become dysfunctional over time. It also adopted the innovative practice of drawing up a Strategic Value Contract to capture the strategic and financial ‘promises for performance’ of its businesses.
