Chapter Chapter 7 in Implementation of Basel Accords in Bangladesh, 2021, pp 157-171 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The grave financial indiscipline and irregularities during the period 2009–2018 put several Bangladeshi commercial banks into a distress condition, which became a major concern for academics as well as policymakers. This chapter provides the readers with the case analysis of banks distress to analyze how once profitable PCBs and SCBs were turned into troubled banks only within a couple of years. Here we raise the cases of the Farmers Bank Limited (FBL), AB Bank Limited (ABBL) and Janata Bank Limited (JBL). The structure of the chapter is as follows. Section 7.2 describes the cases of above-mentioned three banks distress in Bangladesh. Section 7.3 looks at the BB Order 1972 to point out the unsolved issues in the supervision by the BB as concluding remarks to this chapter.
