Chapter Chapter 2 in Managing Multiple Organizational Goals in Turbulent Environments, 2022, pp 17-74 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter presents a broad spectrum of literatures upon which to build understanding of the examined constructs. We aim to extend the understanding of multiple organizational goals to be more inclusive of organizational control and environmental turbulence. To better understand the approaches of managing multiple goals, we propose the notion of goal polychronicity, examining two distinct theoretical models regarding organizational controls as antecedents of goal polychronicity and the performance impact of goal polychronicity to answer the two main research questions. To provide the theoretical background on the constructs that support these theorized models, this chapter reviews the literature regarding organizational goals, organizational control, and environmental turbulence. Key implications from these literatures are drawn for further hypothesis development and to provide insights for future research.
