Chapter Chapter 5 in Sustainable Human Resource Management Strategies and Practices, 2024, pp 111-135 from Springer Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, the discussion continues around how to make organisations more sustainable by focusing on the ecological dimension of sustainability and greening issues in HRM. The objective of this chapter is to show how environmental management activities including both top-down (corporate governance) and bottom-up (individual employee level green behaviour) are related to employee engagement using green HRM for environmental sustainability. International Standards Organization (ISO1) 4001 and European Union Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) as tools for implementing environmental management systems (EMS) are explained to align green HRM to EMS to enhance environmental sustainability. Furthermore, anthropocentric (pro-organizational) and ecocentric (pro-environmental) green HRM are discussed to engage employees in EMS to achieve economic and environmental outcomes of corporate sustainability. In addition, the framework of synthesis of green HRM is proposed to proactively manage the paradox/tension in implementing anthropocentric and ecocentric green HRM for preserving the health of ecosystem while utilizing natural resources for economic benefits of organizations.
