Chapter Chapter 6 in Reliability and Safety Engineering, 2016, pp 183-217 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The role of software has dramatically increased in the recent past. The importance of software reliability is emphasized with the examples of past failures in safety critical systems. Software reliability is considerably different from hardware reliability, for instance, the former does not wear out but only obsolete. This chapter explains the concepts of software reliability engineering including software reliability models and its implementation process. The classification of software reliability models based on a literature survey is presented. A prediction model that is based on neural networks is also discussed, which overcomes some of the limitations of the classical approaches. A case study on mobile phone software is given to enhance the understanding of the software reliability concepts.
