Abstract: Abstract Numerical decision tools are abundantly employed in safety engineering. Two of the most commonly used tools are safety factors and exposure limits. A safety factor is the ratio of the maximal burden on a system not believed to cause damage to the highest allowed burden. An exposure limit is the highest allowed level of some potentially damaging exposure.
