Chapter Chapter 1 in Reliability Assessment of Safety and Production Systems, 2021, pp 3-5 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Since the dawn of time, human beings have had to face risks and, unfortunately, occurring accidents (e.g. in nuclear, spatial, transportation, industrial, sanitary domains, etc.) remind that all too often. This highlights that the zero risk is a utopia and that it can be reduced only to an acceptable level. For a long time, this has been done by simple trial and error processes but, nowadays, as described in this book, this is more and more often achieved by analyses using the knowledge of the past to forecast what could happen in the future in order to mitigate the risk even before it arises.
