Chapter Chapter 19 in Reliability Assessment of Safety and Production Systems, 2021, pp 245-255 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter introduces the basic probabilistic calculation framework shared by the dual reliability block diagram (RBD) and fault tree (FT) approaches. Elementary RBD structures (series and parallel) and FT logic gates (OR, AND) are considered first. Then they are combined in order to build realistic models of industrial systems. This is extended to the use of NOT, NOR and NAND gates with primary events and to the majority vote operators. Finally, the Sylvester-Poincaré formula is established: it allows to calculate the probability of a system failure from its minimal cut sets and has been, for decades, the only available way to proceed to probabilistic calculations with RBDs or FTs. It is still widely used, even if it is now superseded by calculations based on the implementation of the binary decision diagrams described in Chap. 21 .
