Chapter Chapter 3 in Design of Mechanical Systems, 2023, pp 111-147 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter will discuss what the probability and its distribution in mechanical systems are. It will be basic concepts to understand the product lifetime. Once a product is designed and launched, it will suddenly fail in the field. Similar to the Poisson distribution, it rarely happens. When examining the failure products, we can recognize that there are some design imperfections in a multimodule product. To completely understand it, we should have to know the basic concepts such as random variables, probability, distribution, etc. Based on that, if we understand some knowledge of reliability engineering—reliability (or unreliability), bathtub curve, Weibull distribution, Weibayes method, maximum likelihood estimate (MLE), Mean Time To Failure (MTTF), BX life, etc., we can assess the product lifetime after gathering the failure data.
