Chapter Chapter 3 in Evolving Transportation Networks, 2011, pp 25-30 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This book aims to understand the complexity of transportation development and construct analytical explanations of the evolution of transportation networks. Transportation development is driven by the interaction of demand and supply, while subject to temporal and spatial constraints. Therefore, a meaningful model of network growth requires comprehensive consideration of the four dimensions of demand, supply, space, and time, which are briefly surveyed in the next four sections. Critical assumptions are also laid out, while their role may only become apparent in subsequent chapters. Figure 3.1 illustrates the mutual relationship between these key elements.
