Abstract:
From a historic perspective, three particularities stick out: The first is the fact that the "European project" is quite a recent endeavour, and that it has emerged out of voluntary agreement rather than armed conflict, as had been typical for previous territorial enlargements. The second particularity is that the driving force of integration has been economic interest, even though the primary motivation of its founding fathers was political.
