Chapter 1 in Reengineering in Action:The Quest for World-Class Excellence, 1999, pp 3-15 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: AbstractA large part of reengineering practice has focused on fixing organizational problems, and much scholarly debate has centered around the relevance and strengths of the paradigm for serving such purposes. However, the true value of reengineering lies in organizational transformation, which will be missed by practitioners who use reengineering only to address mundane factors of operational process efficiency. The contemporary role of reengineering is to reinvent organizations in order to attain world-class excellence. Eleven key principles for high-impact reengineering, drawn from many years of hands-on experience, are outlined in this chapter: reengineering while being successful; reengineering without risks; reengineering for strategy; reengineering as a synergy of the best methods; envisioning; process thinking; systems thinking; creative rethinking; change management; preparation; and reengineering for the future.
