Chapter 3 in Reengineering in Action:The Quest for World-Class Excellence, 1999, pp 37-54 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: AbstractBusiness process reengineering is becoming a widespread practice, but there is not yet a general approach which can be used in all environments. The central problem is related to differences in process definition and available tools to support the process redesign. This chapter presents a task/communication model based on task workflows and communication loops. By separating the analysis of the process into two views and using the object-agent paradigm, alternative reengineering solutions to achieve business objectives and task assignment can be tested dynamically. A prototype system called RARE (Role, Activity, Resource, Event) is described. First, a basic set of relevant modeling primitives is clearly defined, then to each concept, generic objects or agents are associated in order to have a uniform logical description of the whole system. Finally, a simple example ofBPR using RARE is given.
