Chapter 23 in Reengineering in Action:The Quest for World-Class Excellence, 1999, pp 407-428 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: AbstractMany BPR projects fail because they attempt to initiate organizational change using an ideological rather than a scientific approach. A scientific approach to business process reengineering would be based on clear definitions, variables, hypotheses, research design and verification strategy. This chapter attempts to develop a more scientific approach to BPR through the application of an axiomatic model that standardizes language, methodology, and measurement. It is argued that a more scientific approach to BBR will help build a valid and reliable body of knowledge for making predictions, validating outcomes, and guiding future decisions. Three case studies are presented to illustrate how BPR can be applied more scientifically to understand and improve organizational performance.
