Abstract:
AbstractThe FPD(Flat Panel Display) market is rapidly growing with the advancement of digital technologies. As demand has moved from analog TV sets to digital ones, one sees a rapid growth of the FPD TV market. And there was a vague idea that technical differences of LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and PDP(Plasma Display Panel) would divide the FPD TV market: LCD for small size screen TVs and PDP for large ones. However, unexpectedly rapid progress in the LCD industry led itself to expand into the large screen markets. Accordingly, the competition between LCD and PDP in this market segment is getting fiercer. We examine in this article the underlying system dynamics which led LCD to catch up PDP and eventually induced the collapse of market boundaries between LCD and PDP. We also demonstrate key feedback mechanisms which caused LCD to gain an advantage over PDP.
