Abstract: AbstractAgricultural activities near or within protected terrestrial aquatic ecosystems are considered a major threat to environmental conservation in all Mediterranean countries. The sustainability of lake reserves depends to a significant degree on the sustainability of the local economies. The reverse is also true because the reserves provide irrigation water and other products and resources that are vital for agricultural development. This paper presents a systemic analysis of the nature-man dynamic interaction within a protected environmental complex, considering their dependence on the water regime as a source of conflict, i.e., the benefit for one party has catastrophic impact on the other. Based on ecological and economic criteria, this analysis aims at assisting local environmental policymaking towards true sustainable development, focusing mainly on successful upstream intervention and integrated solutions rather than local amelioration of downstream effects.
