Abstract:
AbstractMotivation is an important factor for the successful implementation of a knowledge sharing culture. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors that motivate librarians to share knowledge in their workplace. This paper reports the results of the data collected from a sample of 34 academic librarians using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis involved Spearman's correlations and content analysis. The findings revealed that librarians tended to value more intrinsic rather than extrinsic motivation for sharing knowledge like the 'just in time' provision of knowledge or the presence of a friendly and team-based working environment. In the case of extrinsic motivation, they perceived that the evaluation of job performance was the most important factor that motivated them to share knowledge.
