Michele Andréia Borges, Márcia Aparecida Prim and João Artur de Souza

Chapter 14 in Knowledge Governance and Learning for Organizational Creativity and Transformation, 2021, pp 255-275 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Social innovation has evolved as an important mechanism to respond to global social challenges and the social demands of territories. A relevant feature of its process is the collaboration between multiple actors, through the formation of cross-sector partnerships, which include, in its definition, the involvement of various sectors of the economy, beyond the community and the individual himself. The underlying complexity of the relationships formed demands a systemic look at the dynamics of these partnerships, as well as participatory governance. Through a multiple case study approach on social innovation initiatives in Portugal, this chapter aims to understand how partnership relations for social innovation are established. The results allowed identifying the essential elements to the partnerships and thus present guidelines to support the development of cross-sector partnerships for social innovation initiatives. Although the empirical scenario is in Portugal, the guidelines are supported by theories and scientific results at a global level, and are flexible and adaptable in order to obtain adherence to other cultural, political, social and economic contexts.
