Chapter 10 in Trauma to Triumph:Rising from the Ashes of the Asian Financial Crisis, 2022, pp 161-173 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
Japan's engagement in the Asian financial crisis (AFC) was multidimensional and consequential. On the one hand, a turnaround in Japanese bank lending contributed to the big swings in capital flows to the region. The bursting of the Japanese asset bubble in 1989-1990 caused Japanese banks to withdraw capital from the region where previously they had been major lenders. On the other hand, when the crisis erupted, Japanese policymakers were very proactive. They organized financial assistance initiatives for the crisis-hit economies and provided leadership to lay the groundwork for regional financial cooperation.
