Abstract:
AbstractDespite widespread belief that effective implementation of Electronic Medial Record (EMR) will provide dramatic healthcare benefits, the adoption of EMR has been slow and less than thirty percent. Its implementation has not been complete which has caused disruption to workflow in health practices. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the application of computer-mediated collaborative design of EMR systems to overcome the obstacles of current EMR systems. Likewise, the author proposes analysis of the potential benefits that collaborative design (CD) could bring to EMR systems development. A computer-mediated collaborative design process may encourage cooperation for problem solving by connecting EMR end-users such as physicians, staff, patients, and vendors. The findings of his study indicate that priority should be placed on integrating an EMR system into previous systems. This should allow a seamless transition between systems and increase efficiency. However, limitations in current EMR designs do not allow such integration. To ameliorate and overcome these weaknesses, EMR vendors need to change their approach to EMR design.
