Chapter 4 in The UCLA Anderson Business and Information Technologies (BIT) Project:A Global Study of Technology and Business Practice (2016), 2016, pp 59-70 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
In this chapter, we examine the evolving role of the “product manager” in high tech companies. This role encompasses multiple tasks and responsibilities, ranging from market research to process improvement. The role can be complex since it requires communication with many functional groups, including engineering and marketing. We surveyed product managers to determine the typical responsibilities of the role, the main activities involved, and the skills and capabilities that are important success in the job. It appears that the task requires a wide variety of skills, which cut across traditional functional areas. It also appears that often the authority vested in the role is often not commensurate with its responsibility.
