HR to Sustainable HR: A Shift for a Better Tomorrow

Shikha Kapoor

Chapter 3 in Managing for Sustainability:The Role of Human Resource Management in Advancing SDG Goals, 2025, pp 43-65 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: The focus of HRM is the efficient use of people to accomplish both corporate and personal goals. HR help in improving the potential of the employees at work to get the most out of them. Human Resources (HR) departments are becoming important forces behind organizational sustainability, moving beyond typical administrative duties. HR directors are essential in creating sustainable workplace practices as the emphasis on environmental and social responsibility grows globally. Organizations run a higher risk of outsourcing and automation since the human resources (HR) function is frequently seen as a cost center and a process function. However, because HRM is ingrained in all organizational business functions, it is also in a unique position to assist businesses in cross-functional transformational change initiatives. The triple bottom line (TBL) and sustainable HR provide HR departments with the chance to become more strategically involved in their businesses. This chapter offers tactical and strategic models together with implementation guidelines to help HR reclaim their position as the engine of the company’s competitiveness through sustainable HR.
