Imputations and corrections on the SSEL for payroll and employment

Abstract: Researchers using data for employment and payroll from the Standard Statistical Establishment List (SSEL) will notice that there are four general categories of data: blank, reported, imputed, and corrected. Depending on the research question being addressed, the researcher may want to treat data differently based upon these classifications. For example, if one were interested in comparisons across agencies in their data collections, one might want to be able to distinguish between reported data and data that have been in some way edited by the host agency. This note describes the different methods of correcting and imputing the payroll and employment data in the SSEL. Since the distinction between corrected and imputed data is not always clear, the edits are described in detail. In addition, the note describes the frequency of imputes and corrections of the data. The information in this note is most applicable to the SSEL as processed in the early 1990s.
