Evaluating the "Export Destination" field in the 1997 Commodity Flow Survey

Russell Hillberry

CES Technical Notes Series from Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau

Abstract: This exercise is intended as an evaluation of the quality of the export destination field in the raw CFS data files. We wish to know whether the information in this data can be deemed reliable as an input into studies of international commodity movements. In particular, we wish to know whether these data are similar to other data sources documenting the level, destination, and composition of U.S. exports. To the degree that the CFS proves unreliable, we hope to make some suggestions that would improve the collection of export data in future Commodity Flow Surveys.
