MEPS Documentation: Age of the Firm: A Comparison of the MEPS' Collected Measure and the LBD's Constructed Measure

CES Technical Notes Series from Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau
Abstract:
This technical note outlines the concerns with the MEPS – IC firm age data and discusses a comparison of the MEPS measure to an alternative source of this data, the firm age measure constructed in the LBD (Longitudinal Business Database) for 1996 through 2000. Survey staff and researchers have expressed concern about missing firm age data in the MEPS – IC. In addition, establishments that are part of the same firm may fail to report the same age for the firm. Finally, we have observed suspicious shifts in the implied age distribution of MEPS – IC responses over time.
