Abstract:
This memo documents methods for linking records from Compustat with SSEL files. It also describes the bridge file resulting from using these methods to match a March 2001 Compustat extract to SSEL files for 1981-2000. We match about 83% of currently traded records, and about 90% of inactive Compustat records. However, after eliminating problems with duplication, matches to always-inactive establishments on the SSEL, and matches where it appears that active years on the SSEL are disjoint from active years in Compustat, 76% of the original records remain in the bridge file. The last section discusses issues involved in updating the links for additional years of data.
