Abstract:
In this note, I evaluate the quality of responses to the three new technology-related questions asked as part of the 2017 Census of Retail Trade. Establishments in several retail industries, including supermarkets and drugstores, were asked for the first time whether they had a dedicated self-checkout lane. Supermarkets were also asked whether they offered delivery and/or pre-ordering services. Finally, restaurants were asked whether they have enabled ordering and/or payment using an electronic device at the table.
