Exploiting Trade Engagement and Cost Structures to Improve the Quality of the LEHD Successor-Predecessor and T26 Employer Characteristics Files

Abstract: This report details improvements to the quality of the LEHD Successor-Predecessor Files (SPF) and T26 Employer Characteristics Files (ECF) by exploiting information about trade engagement, geographic distribution, employment characteristics, and cost structures using data from the LFTTD and LBD. Improvements to the SPF include adding new variables and important contextual information and examining the quality of successor-predecessor matches. Improvements to the ECF include imputing domestic and international shares of input spending where these characteristics are currently unknown and augmenting this data with additional information indicating the share of revenue derived from foreign vs. domestic sources. This report also presents a summary analysis comparing employment at establishments between the ECF and the LEHD Employment History Files.
