Abstract:
Headquarters and the economic activity they perform and direct are important for economic growth. Establishments classified as headquarters (NAICS 55) accounted for approximately 3 million workers in 2012 (data.census.gov/table/ECNBASIC2012.EC1255A1?q=EC1255A1). One objective of FSRDC Project GT01832 is to describe a methodology to identify a firm's headquarters using information collected by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). As a by-product of this project, I identified another issue with the data quality of the NAICS 55 data in the SSL and Economic Census files. This Technical Note provides information on the scale and scope of this issue and describes code to address the issue.
