Matching Producer Price Index Microdata to the Standard Statistical Establishment List

William Chen

CES Technical Notes Series from Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau

Abstract: This technical report describes an initial attempt at a linkage between the Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index (PPI) microdata and the Census Bureau’s Standard Statistical Establishment List (SSL). Since the SSL is linked to the Longitudinal Business Database (LBD), this PPI-SSL linkage can serve as a crucial resource for longitudinal studies on pricing behavior by firms in the US. My methodology involves a series of stages using fuzzy firm name matching, supplemented with data on state and industry codes.
