Abstract: This technical report evaluates the accuracy of firm identifiers assigned to Canadian export transactions in the Longitudinal Firm Trade Transactions Database (LFTTD). Using the Pierce-Schott-HS-to-NAICS concordance, we compare each matched firm's NAICS code to the industry implied by the HS product code and construct a NAICS-distance metric. We then test whether smaller HS-NAICS distances predict Census’s chosen match and whether those matches persist across years. The findings validate Census’s current coarse-rule selection while highlighting distance and persistence as practical diagnostics for future matching.
