Abstract:
This paper presents a new questionnaire concerning behaviors towards risk and the future. Interviewees are a thousand individuals who are a subsample of the "Patrimoine 1997" Survey conducted by Insee, collecting wealth data on 10 000 French households. Some 80 questions, dealing with different fields of life (consumption, leisure, assets, labor, retirement, family...), should allow to build, for each interviewed individual, consistent relative indicators - qualitative "scores" - which measure a general attitude towards risk and uncertainty (rather than, precisely, risk aversion or prudence), and time preference, which has two components: the degree of impatience and the degree of foresight. Besides its own interest, the principal aim of this study is to assess if, as it is predicted by theory, these preference parameters have an explanatory power of wealth distribution and composition, thus allowing to reduce individual unobserved heterogeneity in econometric and statistical analysis.
