Consumer attitudes towards a central bank digital currency

Dimitris Georgarakos, Geoff Kenny, Luc Laeven and Justus Meyer

No 3035, Working Paper Series from European Central Bank

Abstract: We field a series of experiments in a survey of European consumers to examine attitudes towards the introduction of a digital euro. We find that providing information via a short video explaining its key features significantly increases the immediate likelihood of adoption, although these effects largely dissipate after three months. Our findings underscore the role of effective and repeated communication for CBDC adoption. We also show that the introduction of a digital euro would lead to only limited broad portfolio reallocation. Additionally, varying holding limits between €1,000 and €10,000 does not materially affect the composition of liquid asset holdings. JEL Classification: E41, E58, D12, D14, G51
