No 99, GRAPE Working Papers from GRAPE Group for Research in Applied Economics

Abstract: This paper examines the gender gap in entrepreneurship and hiring among new ventures in the first year in Norway, using register data from 2004 to 2013. The study compares the roles and gender of founders and early-stage hiring. The main findings are that female CEOs, both owner and non-owner, are more likely to hire at least one employee, but they hire fewer employees and more part-time workers than male CEOs. Moreover, we tend to find patterns of assortative matching. We discuss the implications of our results on the relationship between gender diversity and the hiring in new ventures
