Abstract: This study analyzes the opinions of the presidents and chancellors of major public universities throughout the United States regarding the development (fund raising )function in their institutions. The chief executive officers of the 40 universities which generated over $20 million in private sector support in the 1995-96 academic year were surveyed, and their responses are reviewed in this report. They were asked their opinions on such subjects as the cultivation of donors, the time they direct to development pursuits, their involvement in Foundation activities and the priority they feel the development function must play in their universities. These officers also conveyed the future emphasis their institutions must place on development if they are to continue ntheir position among the national leaders.
