The Political Psychology of Trickster-Clown. An Analytical Experiment Around Communism as a Myth

A. Horvath

Working Papers from European Institute - Political and Social Sciences

Abstract: This paper argues that the fanatical will and power that hypnotised people in Eastern Europe during Communism was initiated by the activities of a Jungian archetype: the trickster-clown. Furthermore, in comparison with this, the paper develops an alternate figure based on the work of Max Weber: the charismata. Though both types appear among the disturbances of liminal periods, as a response to similar threshold experiences, they carry different messages: those of hate and grace, respectively.
