The Canada-U.S. manufacturing productivity gap revisited: new ICOP results

Abstract: This paper applies the ICOP methodology for industry-of-origin comparisons to measure the manufacturing productivity gap between Canada and the United States. The paper discusses the ICOP method and presents recent refinements to the methodology in order to meet some of the criticisms that were raised earlier. It then presents provisional estimates of a fresh comparison of relative levels of manufacturing productivity between the two countries for 1997. Finally the paper revisits the long term trend of comparative labour productivity between the two countries and compares the outcomes with those from earlier studies.
