Abstract:
Summary nutrition labels facilitate healthier food choices, but no research tried to understand if and how retailers use them. We content-analysed the websites of 12 retailers (n=22 observed store-branded and manufacturer-branded cereals) by focusing on the Nutri-score, a 5-colour nutrition labelling system. We found a high frequency (86.4%) in the disclosure of the Nutri-score. However, a few retailers hold brands accountable in cases of provided (21.1%) and unprovided (27.3%) Nutri-scores of the retailed food products. Recommendations are made to retailers to leverage the disclosure of the Nutri-score and its potential influence on brand transparency. Policymakers might consider a regulation that renders Nutri-score presence mandatory in online food retail.
