Abstract: Banking covers a great variety of jobs following the adoption in 1984 of the model of the universal bank and a process of economic concentration. These factors explain why a substantial role is granted to human resources (HR) in order to attempt to homogenise recruitment practices of banking groups, many of which have become huge "monsters". Recruitment in fact is related to two distinct labour markets: one which is predominantly internal in retail banks, and the other which is predominantly professional for both investment banks and merchant banks. Both models created specific forms of governance, which mobilise HR managers and professionals differently both in the organisation and activity of recruitment.
