Abstract: Disability-free life expectancy is frequently invoked in public debates on pensions, particularly to challenge the argument that declining mortality justifies raising the retirement age. This critique rests on the idea that later retirement replaces years of retirement around age 60 with years at very old ages, potentially lowering the quality of retirement as the additional years of life are more often spent with disability. However, this reasoning overlooks the long-term improvement in health conditions. By constructing a new monitoring indicator, the analysis suggests that, taking into account the decline in post-60 disability observed since 2010, expected years of retirement without disability have in fact remained stable or have slightly increased.
