Abstract: This article gives an account of the debate organized by FASOPO on the issue of the controversy concerning the CFA franc when, in January and February 2019, Italy accused France and its "colonial franc" to be responsible for African migration to Europe. Chaired by Jean-François Bayart and Boris Samuel, the roundtable discussion gathered Massimo Amato, Mario Giro, Jean-Pierre Bekolo and Kako Nubukpo. This controversy has offered the opportunity to debate on the place of Africa in the tensions that oppose France and Italy and the specificity of both European nations' colonizations. More deeply, such controversy has allowed to reconsider and reopen the debate on the CFA franc, beyond populist arguments, even if the latter, indeed actual, must be taken into account and analyzed as such.
