Abstract:
The Household Choice in France Between Consumption and Saving from 1966 to 1986 Henri Sterdyniak After increasing from 15.5 % in 1966 to 18.5 % in 1975, the household saving rate decreased to 12.3 % in 1985. This paper establishes, by means of econometric analysis, three main determinants of the evolution of the saving rate. In the short-run, the main determinant is the inertia of consumption relative to the fluctuations in income. In the medium term, households save more when inflation is high and when purchasing power is growing strongly. On the other hand, consumption behaviour does not seem to be much influenced by the rate of return on savings.
