Abstract: During the decades 1970 and 1980 in the United States, the married mothers' participation to the labor market has grown dramatically; this has been the mainspring of the female labor force increase. During the next decade, single mothers have experience a growing labor force involvement. Despite these trends, motherhood has still a negative impact on mothers' careers: interruptions, part time employment and lesser wage. The institutional structure in the United States does not support working mothers, who struggle to balance their family life and working life. This explains in part the motherhood penalty.
