Abstract:
The article presents the evolution of the French oil taxation over the last twenty years, before comparing it to the national taxations within the EC. Even if the French taxation appears to be one of the heaviest in Europe, it could be up-leveled in respect with the last propositions of the European Commission. Increasing the fuel taxation would help the budget deficit not to grow when the economy slows down, knowing that oil prices are rather low, and that some European countries, such as Germany, have already decided to increase their taxes. Last but not least taxing oil means reducing pollution.
